Design of RC across output rectifier

Posted by: fkinder on

What criteria is to be used to select the values of the RC network that is shown across the output rectifier. Present design is for a 24V 2A output.

Hello fkinder,

I'm assuming that you are referring to the output RC snubber circuit as that shown in the image attached. In selecting the values of the RC components, there are some recommended initial values to start with.

1. 470 pF up to 2.2 nF for the capacitor, 470 pF is a good value to start with

2. 10 Ω to 47 Ω for the resistor, 22 Ω is a good value to start with

Values should be adjusted based on the voltage waveform ring across the output rectifier, so you'll need an equipment to view the waveform. Here are some criteria to take into account when adjusting values:

1. The higher capacitance, the better damping effect; however, it is not recommended to set it too large due to power loss

2. The resistance can be decreased or increased depending on its damping effect; however, a higher resistance will lead to a noticeable drop in efficiency.
