Modeling Frequency Response of a Novel Pulse Width Modulated Flyback Control Scheme

During PCIM Europe 2025 in Nuremberg, Adrian Umadhay gave a poster presentation about modeling frequency response to maximize performance. Our new TinySwitch-5 flyback switcher ICs feature an advanced control engine which seamlessly manages switching frequency and power delivery to maximize efficiency, even at light loads. 

This paper describes the controller design, modeling, and verification of a flyback power supply based on an enhanced Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) control technique capable of excellent output voltage regulation, transient response, and high efficiency. The controller is composed of an off-time and peak current modulator, which changes the converter’s switching frequency as a function of output load, resulting in excellent performance across a wide range of input line and output load conditions.
