Meeting Standby Energy Requirements in Motor Drive Applications

During PCIM Europe 2025 in Nuremberg, Juan Paolo Quismundo gave a oral presentation on how to maximize available power to display, controls and communications functions for appliances needing to comply with increasingly stringent standby energy regulations. Our BridgeSwitch motor driver ICs, combined with the MotorXpert software suite, allow sleep-mode power consumption to go as low as 10mW.

The energy or power consumed by an electrical device or appliance while in an off or unused state, also known as standby energy or power, is the target of new efficiency regulations. Different solutions have been proposed to limit the standby energy being drawn by devices when not in use, including the use of mechanical or solid-state relays. This paper proposes a method for reducing standby energy consumption in motor drive applications to meet the standby energy requirements with minimal parts.
