Transient Response for Sensorless Field-Oriented Control Using Integrated Current Sensing

During PCIM Europe 2025 in Nuremberg, Juan Paolo Quismundo gave a poster presentation on how to enable field-oriented control (FOC) without shunts and sensing circuits. Our BridgeSwitch motor driver ICs, combined with the MotorXpert software suite, support a power range of 30 W to 746 W (1 HP) and deliver inverter efficiency up to 99%.

Sensorless Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors requires current information. Integrated current sensing is used to improve current information and reduce component count. An additional current reconstruction algorithm is required to calculate the missing current information with this approach. This paper analyzes the transient response of using integrated current sensing for sensorless FOC to verify its feasibility for high torque-transient applications.
