Ultra-Compact Power Tool Charger with Enhanced Efficiency and Protection Using TinySwitch-5

In this seminar, we will explore compact and efficient charger designs leveraging the TinySwitch-5 IC family, which integrates primary-side high voltage switch, excellent surge-withstand and advanced protection features in a single device. The TinySwitch-5 family of ICs enable designers to achieve high power density, excellent efficiency, and robust fault tolerance in low-power applications, while minimizing external components and simplifying layout.

The TinySwitch-5 family supports multiple package options - for PCB or heatsink cooling, offering flexibility for thermal design while meeting mechanical constraints. We will showcase three reference designs:

  • DER-1027 demonstrates high-efficiency for 120 W output with integrated protection and low standby power. Power capability can be increased to 190 W using a boost PFC input stage.
  • RDR-1040 describes a compact 36 W isolated flyback design optimized for high efficiency across load to meet stringent energy standards.
  • DER-1017 showcases the advanced fault handling and PCB cooling enabled by the Tinyswitch-5 in the K package.

This session demonstrates how TinySwitch-5 streamlines charger design with a minimal component count, making it an ideal choice for portable power tool applications.
