Designing a High-Efficiency, Compact, Portable EV 2-wheeler (E2W) Charger with High Power Factor

In this webinar, we will explore how to design E2W chargers using Power Integrations’ HiperPFS™-3, HiperPFS™-5, InnoSwitch™4-CZ, and HiperLCS™-2 IC families of power conversion ICs. The advanced switcher ICs enable highly integrated boost PFC, Active Clamp Flyback (ACF), or LLC Half Bridge + SR solutions with high power density and more than 94% end-to-end conversion efficiency.

The choice of flyback or LLC allows the designer to optimize performance for output power levels up to 1650 W. Each HiperPFS-5 IC includes a PFC controller, 750 V high-voltage PowiGaN™ switch, X-capacitor discharge, and high-voltage startup circuits. The HiperPFS-5 IC features quasi-resonant control for the lowest switching losses, which works flawlessly with an InnoSwitch4-CZ stage in the 95 % efficient DER-930 design example.

The HiperPFS-3 family of devices incorporate a continuous conduction mode (CCM) boost PFC controller, gate driver, ultra-low reverse recovery diode, and high-voltage power silicon MOSFET into a compact, heat-sinkable package. The DER-996 design shows how two HiperPFS-3 PFC stages may be paralleled to boost power output to 1800 W in a very small form factor. The InnoSwitch4-CZ is an Off-line CV/CC flyback switcher IC that includes a 750V PowiGaN switch, active clamp driver and synchronous rectification.

The InnoSwitch4-CZ pairs with the ClampZero™ active clamp IC to dramatically improve DC-DC conversion efficiency by reducing primary switch losses. The HiperLCS-2 chipset incorporates a 600 V FREDFET in a resonant half-bridge configuration with control, level shifting drive and self-powered start-up. The companion IC is the HiperLCS2-SR SR driver IC that provides reinforced isolated feedback via FluxLink™ magneto-inductive coupling, as well as output sensing and SR management.

The chipset achieves a conversion efficiency of 98%. We will also present a 720 W reference design kit (RDK-1063) utilizing the HiperLCS-2 chipset plus HiperPFS-3 IC to provide a wide range -26 VDC – 60 VDC, output. The combination of an LLC resonant half-bridge along with variable frequency CCM mode PFC means that the design achieves 94% efficiency. The power supply has a no-load input power of less than 2 W.
